Southport FC beat Atherton Collieries 4-3 on penalties to lift the Challenge Trophy for the second successive time.

Southport FC and Atherton Collieries’ scramble for the Challenge Trophy was forced to continue past 90 minutes as the scoreline read 0-0 at full time.

It became clear just 15 minutes in that this game wasn’t going to be an easy feat for either side with a fantastic display of end to end football for the duration of the final – thrilling for a neutral but nervewracking for the clubs’ stalwart fans.

In the end the eventual winner had to be decided with a penalty shoot-out and it was Southport FC who came away victorious winning 5-3 from the spot.
