Training and Development

Lancashire FA provides further development opportunities for Referees who have a desire to progress in the game. Below outlines the various groups and their roles.

LFA Young Potentials

The Young Potentials is aimed at officials aged between 16 -18 who show potential in the early stages of their career, and are keen and enthusiastic to progress. The group has four evening sessions in the season. Each one consists of a physical training session, a healthy meal and a classroom training seminar which is both interactive and informative.

The purpose of the group is designed to deliver specific and relevant training to young, ambitious, dedicated and talented referees. A clear pathway is open to the Young Potentials who can then progress further to the Referees Development Group at the age of 18, providing they show they have the ability required. The group is directed by Level 1 National List Referee Darren Bond and Level 3 Contributory League Referee and National List Assistant Peter Gooch.

Referees must have applied for promotion in order to be eligible to join the Young Potentials group.  At the end of the season eligible referees will be emailed an invite to apply to join the group.  Should you need any further information on the Young Potentials Group please contact the Referee Development Manager, Steve Stewart.

Academy Development Group 1

A specialist group of Level 6 and Level 5 officials who are keen, enthusiastic and dedicated; they exhibit the desire to progress to the next Level, and have applied for promotion to the next level. These officials attend four development evenings throughout the season, which are specifically aimed at improving not only their fitness levels but also include specific technical sessions with key note speakers in attendance.

Steve Stewart, Referee Development Manager and FA Level 4 tutor, is the Director of this group.  Invitations to apply are sent to all eligible officials during the close season.  For further information on the group please contact Steve Stewart.

Academy Development Group 2
A select group of officials who are all operating at Supply League standard as a level 4 referee.  This group aims to support not only our newly promoted Level 4 referees, but also provides a coaching and mentoring system to our existing referees.

The group is directed by Level 2b Referees and National List Assistants Michael Salisbury and Scott Oldham, and the group meet at least three times a season for development evenings.  The group places emphasis on a group support network, where members receive quality coaching through the experienced group directors, but also take responsibility for mentoring each other.

National Referee Development Programme – Stage Four
Referees showing exceptional potential as a level 5 or 4 official will be nominated to be part of the North West Regional Academy.  This group is currently directed by FIFA International and Premier League Referee Anthony Taylor.   Lancashire FA also has coaching representation through Level 2b Referee and National List Assistant Paul Marsden and Level 3 Referee and National List Assistant Iain Siddall.

This group meet several times throughout the season at varying locations and work on key aspects of their game which will see them reach the highest levels of the game.  The group provides opportunities to referee tournaments internationally as well as Premier League Academy Tournaments both locally and at St.Georges Park.

Level 3 Officials
A small group of officials who referee at Contributory Level, but do not have a coach provided through The FA. Ran by Eddie Lomas, the group meet four times a year, analyse their games and discuss methods to help improve performances.
