Lancashire through to AoNC Youth Division semi finals

LANCASHIRE FA 4-2 WESTMORLAND FA
Association of Northern Counties – Youth Division Two
Monday 3rd April, The County Ground
Goals: Kaye (10, 26), Richardson (71), Woodhead (78)

Lancashire FA U18s sealed a place in the Association of Northern Counties Youth Division knockout stages after a comfortable victory over Westmorland FA.

The win puts Lancashire top of Youth Division Two on goal difference, as second-placed Liverpool FA progress with them to the semi finals.

From Youth Division One, Durham FA and Lincolnshire FA have also made it through to the knockout stages.

On a gloomy evening at the County Ground, Lancashire brightened spirits by taking the lead inside the first 10 minutes through Alex Kaye.

The striker took his goal well, firing a low shot into the bottom corner from just outside the box.

Westmorland equalised after 24 minutes through Will Booth, who struck from close range in a swift move, but the visitors could only remain on level footing for two minutes.

Kaye bagged a brace shortly afterwards with a cool and composed finish as he found himself with plenty of time and space in the box, following a smart left-sided cross from John Woodhead.

The second half saw much of the same for Lancashire, who looked dangerous going forward and were rarely troubled defensively by Westmorland.

And after a spell of pressure, they extended their advantage through Alex Richardson, who leapt highest to head home a fantastic pinpoint delivery by Carnan Dawson.

Woodhead got onto the scoresheet himself seven minutes later, pouncing on Westmorland ‘keeper Joe Fiddler’s poor clearance and finishing with style.

The visitors pulled another back with four minutes to go, when Joshua Casson tucked in a sweeping low ball at the far post.

But Lancashire weren’t finished and had an opportunity to net a fifth when substitute Kyle Preece was upended in the box.

However, it wasn’t to be as Fiddler redeemed his earlier mistake with a thumping save from Preece’s spot-kick.

The penalty miss did little to dampen a solid attacking performance by Lancashire, who will now look forward to their upcoming semi final.

Starting XI: Harry Wissett, Dan Gray, Carnan Dawson, Alex Richardson, Joe Gregory (c), Joe Hamilton, Jordan Darr, Tommy Whitehead, John Woodhead, Joel Drewery, Alex Kaye
